Proposal: Introducing a "Hardcore Mode" Ranking Partition to Combat Intentional Wiping

Hi everyone,

There has been a lot of controversy recently regarding players and guilds intentionally wiping on bosses to reset cooldowns or fish for better RNG to secure higher parses. This “stat-padding” behavior undermines the competitive integrity of the leaderboards and encourages gameplay that goes against the spirit of raiding.

To address this, I propose the implementation of a “Hardcore Mode” ranking category. This partition would prioritize execution and consistency over infinite attempts.

Proposed Mechanics:

  1. Dynamic Wipe Limit: To qualify for the Hardcore rankings, a guild’s total wipe count on a specific boss (or full run) must be below a specific threshold. This threshold is dynamic and will naturally decrease over time, potentially reaching zero as the tier matures.

  2. Threshold Calculation: The maximum allowed wipe count is determined by the performance of the community. Specifically, the limit is set to the wipe count of the Nth guild (e.g., the 500th guild) when ranked by fewest wipes.

    • Example: If the 500th guild has 15 wipes on a boss, the “Hardcore” limit is 15. Any log with 16+ wipes is excluded from this specific ranking.
  3. Sample Size Protection: If the total number of guilds with valid kills is less than the benchmark number (e.g., fewer than 500 guilds have killed the boss), the wipe limit is set to infinity. This ensures the ranking remains open during early progression.

  4. Ranking Eligibility: Only logs that fall strictly within this dynamic maximum wipe count are eligible for the Hardcore Mode leaderboard.

Why this helps:
This system rewards guilds that execute clean kills efficiently. As the general skill level of the community improves, the “allowed wipes” threshold will drop, eventually highlighting only those who can perform perfectly without relying on repeated resets to game the system.

I believe this would be a healthy addition to WCL, separating “speed/execution” rankings from “brute force/RNG” rankings.

Thoughts?

Hello,

We have no plans to change how we rank fights currently. Or to introduce a brand new ranking type.

Thanks for the feedback though, we did pass it to the team.

Have a great day,

Azrael.
